We provide evidence on structural transformation from censuses covering three quarters of the world population. As countries develop, standard patterns labor reallocation hold for broad categories both industries (sectors) and occupations while employment shares service rise in all sectors. propose a model with sectors that is consistent these patterns. The key ingredient our uneven, occupation-specific technological progress. show useful predicting changes occupation composition understanding why sectoral productivity growth has slowed.
